Timber Floor Repairs & Board Replacement in Sydney
Damaged boards, water marks, squeaks and gaps — patched, replaced and blended so the repair disappears into your existing floor.
A damaged timber floor can make a whole room feel tired, but the good news is that most damage is very fixable without ripping up the lot. Jimmy has been repairing and replacing timber floors right across Greater Sydney since 2006, and in most cases we can cut out the bad boards, blend in fresh timber and leave you with a floor that looks like nothing ever happened. If you've got water marks, squeaks, gaps or a few boards that have seen better days, here's how we can help.
Common timber floor problems we fix
A timber floor takes a beating over the years, and most of the damage we see is very fixable without a whole new floor. If a few boards have copped it, or a spot near the kitchen has gone dark from a leak, we can usually sort it without touching the rest of the room. Here are the jobs we get called out for most often around Sydney.
- Water and moisture damage — burst dishwasher hoses, fridge leaks, bathroom overflows and rain through an open window. Water gets under the boards, they cup, swell or lift, and the finish goes cloudy or black. We cut out the affected boards and replace them.
- Pet damage — scratches from claws, and worse, dog or cat wee that soaks in and stains the timber dark. Surface scratches sand out; deep stains usually mean swapping the board.
- Squeaky and springy boards — that squeak underfoot is almost always a board that's worked loose from the joist or subfloor. We re-secure it, and if it's beyond that, we replace it.
- Gaps between boards — timber shrinks and swells with the seasons, and big gaps can open up over the years. We can fill minor gaps or replace boards where the movement has been severe.
- Cracked, split or broken boards — dropped furniture, heavy foot traffic and old age all take their toll. Damaged boards get cut out and replaced.
- Termite or borer damage — once the pest side has been dealt with, we replace the eaten-out boards and blend them back into the floor.
Whatever the cause, the aim is the same: a repair you can't pick out from the rest of the floor.
How board replacement and blending works
The trick with a good repair is making the new timber disappear into the old. Here's the process we follow on a typical floorboard replacement job.
- On-site assessment. Jimmy comes out, has a proper look at the damage, checks what species and profile your boards are, and works out how many need to go. You get a free fixed-price quote before anything starts.
- Cut out the damaged boards. We carefully remove only the boards that need replacing, taking care not to disturb the good timber around them.
- Sort the subfloor. If there's water damage, rot or a loose joist underneath, we deal with that first. There's no point laying new boards over a problem that'll come back.
- Fit matching timber. We source boards in the same species and profile, cut them to fit and secure them properly so there are no future squeaks.
- Sand back the repair. The new boards and the surrounding area are sanded flat and smooth so everything sits level.
- Stain and finish to match. We colour-match and re-coat the repair so it blends into the existing floor, then leave it to cure.
For a small patch we can often knock it over in a day or two. Larger areas take a little longer, and we'll give you a realistic timeline up front.
Matching old timber and finish
This is where experience really counts. Australian hardwoods each have their own grain and colour, and an older floor will have mellowed with age, so a brand-new board straight off the rack rarely matches on day one.
We work with solid Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Brushbox and Sydney Blue Gum, along with engineered timber, so we can match most Sydney homes. To get the blend right we:
- Match the timber species and board width to what's already down.
- Pick boards with similar grain and colour, and lay them so they read as part of the floor.
- Adjust the stain and finish to sit alongside the aged timber around them.
Sometimes a floor has faded unevenly, or the original coating has yellowed over 20 years. In those cases a timber floor patching repair on its own can leave a faint difference in sheen. If a seamless finish matters to you, a full sand and re-coat of the whole room after the repair brings everything to a single, even colour and lustre. Jimmy will tell you honestly which way is worth it.

Repair vs full replacement — how to decide
Not sure whether you need a patch or a whole new floor? Here's the plain-spoken version.
A repair usually makes sense when:
- The damage is limited to a section — a few boards, one wet patch, a squeaky run.
- The rest of the floor is sound and has plenty of timber left to sand in future.
- You want to keep the character of an original hardwood floor.
Full replacement starts to make sense when:
- Damage is spread across most of the room, or the subfloor is failing.
- The boards have already been sanded so many times there's no thickness left to work with.
- The floor is a discontinued profile that can't be matched, and appearance is critical.
In our experience, most Sydney floors are worth saving. A targeted repair is almost always cheaper than a full replacement, and it keeps that lovely aged hardwood you can't buy new. If replacement really is the smarter call, we'll say so.

Frequently asked questions
Can you fix water damaged floorboards without replacing the whole floor?
In most cases, yes. If the water damage is contained to one area, we cut out and replace just the affected boards, sort out any subfloor issue underneath, then blend the repair into the surrounding timber. You'd be surprised how often a nasty-looking wet patch comes back good as new.
How do you stop squeaky floorboards?
A squeak is nearly always a board that's come loose from the joist or subfloor and is rubbing as you walk. We locate the movement and re-secure the board so it sits tight. If the board itself is damaged or worn out, we replace it. Either way, the squeak goes.
Will the new boards match my existing floor?
That's the whole idea. We match the species, board width, grain and colour, then adjust the stain and finish so the repair blends in. On an evenly aged floor the blend is usually excellent. Where a floor has faded unevenly, a full sand and re-coat afterwards brings everything to one consistent colour.
How much does a timber floor repair cost?
It depends on how many boards need replacing, the species and how much blending is involved, so we don't quote sight unseen. Jimmy comes out and gives you a free, fixed-price quote in person, so you'll know exactly what it costs before any work begins.
How long does a repair take?
A small patch of boards is often a one or two day job. Larger areas, or repairs that include a full re-sand of the room, take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we quote so you can plan around it.
Do you work with engineered timber as well as solid hardwood?
Yes. We repair and replace both solid Australian hardwoods and engineered timber floors, and we'll advise on the best approach for whichever type you've got.
