Timber Floor Supply & Installation in Sydney

Solid and engineered timber floors supplied and installed to the highest standard — from timber selection to the final coat.

A new timber floor changes a home more than almost any other renovation, and getting it right comes down to two things: choosing the right boards and having them laid by someone who knows what they're doing. Design Timber Flooring handles both. Owned and run by Jimmy, with more than 20 years on the tools and jobs completed right across Greater Sydney since 2006, it's a proper supply-and-install service that comes to you.

What Supply & Install Actually Includes

When people search for timber floor installation in Sydney, they're often surprised at how much sits between picking a board in a catalogue and walking on a finished floor. A full supply-and-install service takes care of the lot, so you're dealing with one person from start to finish rather than juggling a supplier, a fitter and a finisher.

Here's what's covered when Jimmy supplies and installs your floor:

  • An on-site measure and honest chat about what suits your home and budget
  • Supply of the timber itself, sourced to match the look you're after
  • Acclimatising the boards to your home before a single one goes down
  • Subfloor checks and preparation so the finished floor sits flat and quiet
  • Precision installation in your chosen pattern
  • Sanding and a protective finish coat to seal the deal
  • A tidy clean-up, so you're not left with the mess

Because it's all handled under one roof, there's no finger-pointing if something needs sorting. One person is accountable for the whole job.

Solid Timber or Engineered — Which Is Right for You?

This is the first real decision, and there's no single correct answer. It depends on your home, your subfloor and how you live.

Solid timber is exactly what it sounds like: each board is a single piece of Australian hardwood. It's tough, it lasts for decades, and because it's solid all the way through it can be sanded back and re-coated many times over its life. It's a beautiful, long-term choice for most standard subfloors.

Engineered timber is built in layers, with a genuine timber wear layer bonded over a stable core. That layered construction makes it more forgiving of moisture and movement, so it copes better over concrete slabs and in areas where solid boards might not be ideal. Our engineered range uses European Oak, which gives you that lighter, contemporary European look.

If you're unsure which way to go, that's exactly the sort of thing to talk through during your free on-site quote. The right call usually becomes obvious once we've seen the space.

Timber Species & Patterns Available

The species you choose sets the whole tone of a room, from the colour through to the grain. We work with a select range of proven timbers rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

Solid Australian Hardwoods

  • Blackbutt — pale to golden brown with a fairly even grain; a clean, versatile favourite
  • Spotted Gum — rich, varied tones from chocolate to honey with striking grain movement
  • Brushbox — soft pinkish-brown hues and a fine, uniform texture that reads warm and calm
  • Sydney Blue Gum — warm reddish tones with real character, right at home in a Sydney house

Engineered

  • European Oak — light, elegant and endlessly styleable, ideal for modern interiors and slab subfloors

Laying Patterns

  • Straight — the timeless, classic board layout that suits nearly any home
  • Herringbone — a tailored, elegant zig-zag that adds instant sophistication
  • Chevron — a sharp, continuous V that feels distinctly modern and refined

Herringbone and chevron take more skill and more time to lay, but the payoff is a floor that genuinely stands out. Jimmy's happy to walk you through samples so you can see the species and pattern together before you commit.

The Installation Process, Step by Step

A good floor is as much about preparation as it is about the laying. Here's how a typical job runs:

  1. Free on-site quote — we visit, measure up, discuss timber and pattern, and give you a fixed price with no surprises.
  2. Delivery and acclimatisation — the boards are delivered and left to adjust to your home's conditions, which prevents gaps and cupping later.
  3. Subfloor preparation — we check the subfloor for level and moisture, and correct anything that needs it before laying begins.
  4. Installation — the boards go down in your chosen pattern, carefully and cleanly, with proper attention to the edges and detail work.
  5. Sanding and finishing — the floor is sanded smooth and sealed with your chosen finish for protection and looks.
  6. Final clean and walkthrough — we tidy up and walk the finished floor with you to make sure you're genuinely happy.

For finishing, you can choose a water-based polyurethane in matte or satin — hard-wearing, low-odour and quick to cure — or a hard-wax oil for a natural, tactile feel that's easy to touch up down the track. If you've got an existing floor that needs new life rather than a full replacement, our floor sanding and polishing service covers that too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a timber floor installation take?

It depends on the size of the area, the pattern and the finish, but most residential jobs run over several days once you factor in acclimatisation, laying, sanding and curing time. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your quote so you can plan around it.

Can you install over concrete?

Yes. Concrete slabs are common in Sydney, and engineered timber over European Oak is often the smart choice there thanks to its stability. We'll check the slab for moisture and level during the quote and recommend the right approach.

What's the difference in cost between solid and engineered?

Costs vary with the species, the size of the job and the pattern, so there's no flat rate. Solid hardwood and engineered oak sit in different price brackets, and a herringbone or chevron layout takes more labour than straight boards. Your on-site quote spells it all out clearly.

Do you supply the timber, or do I buy it separately?

We supply everything. That's the whole point of a supply-and-install service — you don't need to source boards yourself or coordinate between a supplier and a fitter.

How do I look after my new floor?

Timber floors are easy to live with: sweep or vacuum regularly, wipe up spills promptly, and use a cleaner suited to your finish. Down the line, a solid floor can be sanded and re-coated to look brand new again.

Which areas of Sydney do you cover?

All of Greater Sydney. Because it's a mobile service with no showroom, Jimmy comes to your home wherever you are across the city.
