Laminate & Hybrid Flooring in Sydney

Affordable, waterproof and pet-friendly floors for rentals, wet areas, kids' rooms and high-traffic homes.

Looking for floors that can handle spilled juice, a puppy's claws and years of foot traffic without breaking the bank? Laminate and hybrid flooring give you the warm look of real timber at a fraction of the cost, with waterproofing and durability that suit real Sydney family life. Design Timber Flooring is owner-operated by Jimmy, with more than 20 years in the trade, and we come to your home anywhere across Greater Sydney to measure up and give you an honest fixed price.

Laminate vs Hybrid: What's the Difference?

Both floors "float" over your subfloor with a click-lock system and both mimic timber beautifully, but they're built differently.

Laminate flooring is made from a high-density fibreboard core topped with a photographic timber-look layer and a tough clear wear coat. It's the budget-friendly option and looks fantastic, though the fibreboard core means it's water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.

Hybrid flooring is the newer all-rounder. It blends the best of laminate and vinyl into a rigid, 100% waterproof board, often built on an SPC (stone plastic composite) core. Hybrid is dimensionally stable, so it copes with Sydney's temperature swings, and it can go straight into wet areas where laminate might struggle.

If your budget is tight and the rooms stay dry, laminate is a smart pick. If you want one waterproof floor to run right through the house, hybrid is usually worth the small step up.

Where Each Floor Works Best

Rentals and Investment Properties

Landlords love these floors because they're affordable to install and easy to replace board by board if a tenant does damage. Hybrid in particular shrugs off the wear and tear of back-to-back tenancies.

Kitchens, Laundries and Bathrooms

This is where hybrid earns its keep. Being fully waterproof, it handles splashes, mopping and the odd overflowing washing machine without swelling or lifting. Laminate is better kept to living areas and bedrooms.

Busy Family Homes

Kids' rooms, hallways and living areas take a beating. The tough wear layer resists scuffs from toys, furniture and school shoes, and cleaning up is just a quick sweep and mop.

Homes with Pets

If you've got a dog or cat, pet-friendly flooring is a must. The hard-wearing surface stands up to claws far better than solid timber, doesn't trap odours, and wipes clean when accidents happen. No more worrying about scratches ruining an expensive floor.

Benefits and Honest Limitations

We'd rather you buy the right floor than the dearest one, so here's the straight story.

What we love about laminate and hybrid:

  • Genuinely affordable compared to solid or engineered timber
  • Waterproof flooring (hybrid) or water-resistant (laminate)
  • Scratch, scuff and pet friendly
  • A huge range of timber looks, colours and plank widths
  • Quick floating install with minimal mess
  • Easy to clean and low maintenance

Where real timber still wins:

  • A solid or engineered timber floor can be sanded back and recoated multiple times over its life; laminate and hybrid cannot be refinished
  • Underfoot, natural timber has a warmth and depth that a manufactured board can't fully match
  • Timber can add more to a home's resale appeal in certain premium suburbs

If you're leaning towards the real thing, have a look at our engineered timber flooring options too, and we can talk you through the trade-offs on site. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, and different rooms in the same house often call for different floors.

The Floating Install Process

One of the big attractions of laminate and hybrid is how cleanly they go down. Because the boards click together and "float" over the subfloor, there's no nailing or messy glue across the whole room. Here's how a typical job runs:

  1. Check and prep the subfloor. We make sure it's clean, dry and level, filling or grinding any high and low spots so the finished floor sits flat.
  2. Lay the underlay. A quality underlay goes down for cushioning, sound reduction and, where needed, a moisture barrier.
  3. Plan the layout. We work out the board direction and starting line so the floor looks balanced and the plank pattern falls right across the room.
  4. Click the boards together. Each plank locks into the next with the click-lock system, floating freely with a small expansion gap around the edges.
  5. Cut around obstacles. Doorways, pipes and cabinets are scribed and trimmed for a neat, professional finish.
  6. Finish the edges. Skirtings or scotia and door trims go on to hide the expansion gap and tidy everything up.

Most rooms are done in a day or two, and you can walk on the floor straight away.

Choosing a Quality Floor

Not all laminate and hybrid is created equal. When you're comparing products, these are the things that actually matter:

  • Wear layer. This is the clear protective top coat. A thicker wear layer means better scratch and scuff resistance and a longer life, which is why it's worth paying attention to in high-traffic homes.
  • Core and waterproofing. For wet areas, insist on a genuine waterproof hybrid with a stable SPC core, not just a water-resistant laminate.
  • Underlay. Good underlay makes a real difference to how the floor feels and sounds underfoot. Skimping here is a false economy.
  • AC rating and thickness. Thicker, higher-rated boards feel more solid and cope better with heavy furniture and busy households.

Because we've been doing this since 2006, we only recommend products we'd happily lay in our own homes, and we'll steer you away from anything that won't last. Browse our recent work in the project gallery to see how these floors look once they're in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hybrid flooring really 100% waterproof?

Yes. A genuine hybrid board with an SPC core is fully waterproof, which is why it's the go-to for kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. Laminate, by contrast, is water-resistant and best kept to dry rooms.

How much does laminate or hybrid flooring cost in Sydney?

It depends on the product, the size of the area and the subfloor prep needed. That's exactly why we offer free on-site quotes with a fixed price, so you know the full cost before committing. Give Jimmy a call on 0404 906 432 for a chat.

Can you install over my existing floor?

Often, yes. Because these floors float, they can sometimes go over an existing hard floor if it's sound and level. We'll assess your subfloor when we come out and give you a straight answer.

How long does laminate or hybrid last?

With a decent wear layer and normal home use, you can expect many years of service. Hybrid tends to be the more durable of the two, especially in wet and high-traffic areas.

Is this flooring good with dogs and cats?

Absolutely. The tough surface resists scratches from claws, doesn't hold odours, and wipes clean easily, making it one of the most practical choices for pet owners.

Can I refinish laminate or hybrid like timber?

No, these floors can't be sanded and recoated the way solid or engineered timber can. If refinishing matters to you, we're happy to talk through your timber options instead.
