The 5 Best Timber Species for Australian Homes
22 October 2025 · 5 min read
Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Brushbox, Sydney Blue Gum and European Oak — compared on hardness, colour and character.
After 20 years of installing floors across Sydney, these are the five species we recommend most often — and where each one really shines.
1. Blackbutt Pale, clean and modern. One of the hardest Australian hardwoods (Janka ~9.1). Bushfire-rated (BAL-29). Our most-requested floor for open-plan family homes.
2. Spotted Gum Warm caramel tones with dramatic chocolate streaks. Very hard (Janka ~11). The right choice if you want character and a floor that hides minor wear.
3. Brushbox Soft pink-brown with an even, almost grain-less look. Beautiful in traditional homes and bedrooms where you want a calmer feel.
4. Sydney Blue Gum A true Sydney native. Pink to red-brown, deepens beautifully with sunlight. Pairs incredibly well with classic Federation interiors.
5. European Oak (Engineered) Wide boards, modern look, factory-finished. Perfect over concrete slabs and apartments. Available in dozens of stains from raw natural to deep smoked.
If you're not sure which suits your home, we bring samples on the quote visit and lay them out in your own light — it's the only way to choose properly.
